Abstract

Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile is a key endemic species among marine angiosperms, which are responsible for the maintenance of the ecosystem balance of the Mediterranean region. The review includes a thorough analysis of the peer-reviewed literature from 2015 to 2025 regarding the evolution, physiology, and necromass characteristics of P. oceanica including the description of the geographical location of the species in the southern Mediterranean coast. The chemical analysis shows an exclusive lignocellulosic composition with high content of macro- and microelements, as well as bioactive compounds. The phenolic profile has been proven as being highly effective in vitro antioxidants, antibacterial, and antifungal activities. Therefore, P. oceanica biomass can be considered as a source of natural biopesticides and plant biostimulants. Additionally, this paper assesses the agricultural potential of the species residues such as banquettes and Neptune balls as the sustainable component of the substrate that can partially replace peat that is not renewable. However, some technical limitations like high tissue saltiness, heavy metals accumulation, high C:N ratio, and heterogeneity should be addressed through optimization of water treatment. Finally, the knowledge gaps that have been identified in the literature and the need for multi-site field tests and green extraction workflow are discussed.
